33 Snailbeach

This project involved the development of a new residential home within the garden of the Clients existing house.

The property was developed as a self-build scheme with timber clad walls to help it sit within its rural environment and was positioned to take advantage of the available natural light..

With extensive, unspoilt views looking out over the beautiful Rea Brook valley, this site was located in a very important part of Shropshire’s industrial heritage and the nearby mine itself is protected as a scheduled ancient monument. Snailbeach Lead Mine is the most complete collection of mine building remains in England.

This required a sensitive design that set the building into its plot and eliminated overlooking. As a result the property sits into the ground and the bulk of the living space is located at first floor level. This helps reduce the property’s visual impact from neighbouring properties and provides privacy to both the occupants and their neighbours.

The strongly gabled design gives a contemporary feel whilst being sympathetic to the local vernacular of the area whilst large glazing floods the interior spaces with light.

On conclusion of a successful planning process with the local authority, JTDS then produced detailed building regulations and construction drawings.
